A 3rd runway at Heathrow would be a disaster for Spelthorne

Spelthorne’s Liberal Democrat councillors are absolutely opposed to the building of a third runway at Heathrow.  The Labour government seem determined to drive this disastrous scheme through, and the Conservatives are cheering them on.

This is not just about another strip of tarmac to the North of the airport, it will generate more noise, more pollution and more traffic right across a wide area.  What benefits there are will go to big businesses, while the price will be paid by the locals.

The previous plans are expected to be revived, and these required Europe’s biggest car park to be built in Stanwell on Green Belt land.  The expansion will mean more cars and the totally inadequate local public transport will not be improved.  It is not just the case that people travel to the airport to fly, but also the additional thousands of workers who will go backwards and forwards around the clock.

Spelthorne Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Cllr Lawrence Nichols said “A third runway at Heathrow and the associated expansion can only be done at the expense of local people.  We will have to live with the traffic, the noise, the congestion and the pollution.  For a government that promised a strong environmental agenda this is shameful. This project flies in the face of any claim to be trying for net zero by 2050.”
