Surrey Elections in Spelthorne
Spelthorne Liberal Democrats are outraged that this year's Surrey County Council elections have been cancelled by the Labour government at the request of Tory County Councillors.
Although defending a majority of only 15, Cllr. Harry Boparai voted against the cancellation of the elections. He said, "The residents of Spelthorne should have the right to elect those making decisions on their behalf. This is a sad day for democracy.”
The official position of the Spelthorne Liberal Democrats is that we totally oppose the cancellation of the elections, we also believe that residents should be consulted about the shape of the future unitary authorities and that no option should be off the table.
CHRIS BATESON
Chris Bateson was selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Staines South & Ashford West Division in next the 2025 Surrey County Council elections if they had taken place.
Chris has been the Spelthorne Borough Councillor since 2019 when won the Conservative stronghold of Staines South and was then returned with over 70% of the vote in 2023 as a consequence of the massive difference he has made.
HARRY BOPARAI
Cllr. Harry Boparai was reselected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Sunbury Common & Ashford Common division in the 2025 Surrey County Council elections if they had gone ahead.
Harry sensationally seized Sunbury Common and Ashford Common from the conservatives by just 15 votes in a by-election in November 2022, and many residents will know from personal experience what a huge difference he has made to the area already. Harry says he is “incredibly proud of all that we’ve accomplished in just two years. Together, the residents and I have had great success by working closely together.”
GERALD GRAVETT
Stanwell & Stanwell Moor Liberal Democrats had selected local champion Gerald Gravett as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Stanwell and Stanwell Moor division in the 2025 County Council elections if they had gone ahead.
Gerald has lived in the local area for over forty years and personally experiences the issues affecting his neighbours. Gerald says that “Stanwell and Stanwell Moor has many issues that seem to have been either ignored or unsatisfactorily dealt with for so long. A fresh approach is needed.”
RICHARD HERMAN
Local champion Richard Herman was selected as the Lib Dem candidate for the Lower Sunbury & Halliford division in the 2025 Surrey County Council election had the Conservatives and Labour not colluded to deny the people of Surrey their democratic right to vote.
Richard is well aware of local issues as he has lived in Lower Sunbury for almost forty years. He now has the time to serve on the council as he recently retired as managing director of his own business which employed 27 staff. Richard's company exported to America & the rest of Europe, so he knows from personal experience the impact of Brexit on business.
