Bernie goes to court - on behalf of residents
Cllr. Bernie Spoor is going to courrt to appeal against a decision of Spelthorne Council. They have approved yet another alcohol seller on The Parade at The Cross. This makes four shops selling alcohol within 50 yards. The Cross is a recognised high crime area and the easy availability of alcohol is one of the causes. Spelthorne Licensing Committee does have some powers to reject an application. But as usual they took the easiest option.
The situation was not helped by the police who had pushed for an alcohol drinking ban with their Public Place Order (DPPO) at The Cross but then did not object to a new outlet selling alcohol. The case was due before Staines Court at the end of November but has now been postponed.
Bernie said: "Someone has to stand up for the residents' rights, which are ignored by the Spelthorne Tories. With one hand they have implemented the Alcohol Ban (DPPO) and with the other agree to increase its availability. Sense - what Sense?"
UPDATE
The hearing has now been delayed a second time. It is now due to be heard on April 7th
