Charity begins at 13,000 feet for Lower Sunbury Lib Dem Candidate, Richard Herman.
Action Man, Richard Herman, is not averse to taking on new challenges. Despite losing his right leg to a rare form of cancer, Richard continues to lead a full & active life and recently completed a parachute jump for Limb Power. This charity supports amputees, individuals with limb difference and their families, helping them to rebuild their lives and improve their physical, social and mental well-being.
Richard says that for anyone mental issues are far harder to deal with than physical ones. It is important therefore that charities like LimbPower exist to provide crucial support, especially since successive governments have long neglected people with disabilities.
Richard was inspired by Jonnie Peacock as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, largely as his hobby is jive dancing, and Richard himself recently agreed to be interviewed by Sunbury Matters magazine in the hope that his story may also provide inspiration and encouragement to others.
Richard doesn’t believe that disability should hold you back so, in addition to making a parachute jump for charity Richard has also been selected as the Lib Dem Candidate for Lower Sunbury & Halliford in next May's county council election - a seat in which the Liberal Democrats only needed another 31 votes to beat the Conservatives last time. Having jumped out of a plane at 13,000 feet, standing for election holds no fears for Richard.
Richard has lived in Sunbury since 1985. He moved into the house his grandparents had lived in since 1959 when he was only 10 months old. He therefore has been connected with Sunbury all his life. Richard loves Sunbury life and everything it has to offer, and he is aware of the local issues and wants to learn more through canvassing and meeting more local residents.
In particular Richard can now speak from experience of the issues affecting those with mobility problems. Having spent 6 months in a wheelchair, during his rehabilitation, Richard has a genuine understanding of the issues he encountered, particularly in Lower Sunbury where he lives.
Richard says, “I now look at the local area through different eyes, as I know how much difference small tweaks can make to people with mobility issues. Fixing rough pavements, the camber on the pavements, being able to open a car door wide all make a huge difference”
However, Richard is now back on his feet, albeit that one is artificial, although one would never know unless he is wearing shorts. Richard played an active part in the last two elections in Sunbury, delivering thousands of leaflets & knocking on hundreds of doors on behalf of the Lib Dem candidates. He might already have called on you. This time Richard is standing himself & you can read more about his campaign by clicking on the following link.
