David Wilshire reprimanded by Tory leader for comparing plight of MPs to Holocaust victims
Disgraced Tory MP, David Wilshire, has been severely criticised by David Cameron for using inappropriate language in emails to constituents. In reply to abusive emails from members of the public he described the current criticism of himself and other MPs as a "witch hunt" and drew parallels with the Holocaust.
Although local Liberal Democrats are appalled at Mr Wilshire's behaviour over his expenses we absolutely condemn the threatening and abusive emails that he is reported as having received.
David Wilshire was forced to issue an apology after David Cameron condemned his comparison of the treatment of MPs with that of Jews in Nazi Germany. The Tory leader said that David Wilshire's remark was "a frankly ludicrous thing to say. I think he should withdraw it."
Mr Wilshire's continues to maintain that he has done nothing wrong in the way he claimed parliamentary allowances, including reportedly charging over £100,000 for services from an unregistered company that he and his partner owned.
Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman, Mark Chapman, said "David Wilshire cannot be surprised that people are angry about his behaviour. So long as he refuses to hold a public meeting there are going to be unanswered questions and people will believe the worst."
Local Liberal Democrats think that it is shameful that David Wilshire does not have the decency to come and explain his behaviour to his constituents. Residents have the right to expect our MP to meet with his constituents and respond to the many questions that need answering. In the absence of a public meeting there is no alternative but to believe the adverse press coverage that he has received.
