Evening of Politics with Dr Al Pinkerton MP a huge success!

15 Mar 2025

The Spelthorne Liberal Democrats were delighted to welcome Dr. Al Pinkerton MP at Staines Methodist Hall on the 28th of February. The new Lib Dem MP for Surrey Heath, who lectures in Geopolitics at nearby Royal Holloway, University of London, delivered a passionate and captivating talk about the international situation, local government reorganisation and highlighted what Lib Dem MPs have been up to in parliament.

Like the Spelthorne Liberal Democrats, Al was outraged about the cancellations of the 2025 Surrey County Council elections and the denial of democracy for local people in Spelthorne and elsewhere in Surrey. The Conservative administration of Surrey County Council recently voted to request that the Labour government cancel the elections and extend their term of office indefinitely until the local government reorganisation process is completed. Councillor Harry Boparai was the only Surrey County Councillor from Spelthorne to have voted against the cancellation of the elections.

Dr. Pinkerton also spoke in great detail about the international situation, strong voices like Al's are needed more than ever at a time of international instability. Many will have seen or heard the "press conference" held by Trump with President Zelenskyy, in which Trump and Vance behaved like playground bullies. Dr Pinkerton spoke passionately about the need to defend liberal democracy against dictators and strongmen.

Following Al's speech, a question and answer session was held after which members and supporters enjoyed light refreshments and an opportunity to mingle. The event was a great success.
Our events are advertised on social media and all supporters are welcome to attend.
