Exit of EU workers hitting NHS staffing

Official statistics released by the NHS show that EU doctors and nurses are leaving the Health Service in record numbers and that the rate of departures is increasing. Research by the British Medical Association indicates that 4 in 10 EU doctors are considering leaving the UK and a further 25% are unsure on their future after the referendum.

The Liberal Democrat leader, Vince Cable, has called on the government to take immediate steps to stop the exodus from the NHS. "Theresa May must make a bold offer to the EU to ringfence negotiations on citizens' rights and come to a rapid agreement. We are losing thousands of high-quality nurses and doctors from the NHS, driven partly by this government's heartless approach to the Brexit talks," he said.
