Fire safety in Spelthorne must not be compromised

After the tragic events at Grenfell Towers local Liberal Democrat Councillor, Sandra Dunn, has questioned Spelthorne's MP to enlist his support for strengthening local fire safety. She recently wrote to Kwasi Kwarteng as shown below:

I was going to ask you a question at last week's LOSRA meeting but unfortunately you were not able to attend due to your duties in Parliament so I am taking the opportunity to email you the question as I feel it is a very important one and needs addressing.

'Given the tragic event at Grenfell Towers recently should we now re-visit the decision to reduce Spelthorne's fire cover to a single fire a appliance?'

I believe you have an excellent relationship with David Hodge, the Leader of SCC, so I believe the residents of Spelthorne would be very grateful for your help in this matter.

Many thanks

In his response Mr Kwarteng stated:

'I believe that Staines fire station will now remain open at least until the new Ashford base is completed, which I expect to be around mid-2018. At that time, I will be looking again very closely at the situation in Spelthorne, as it is essential that any changes should not compromise the safety of people living in Spelthorne.'

The terrible events at Grenfell highlight the genuine risks associated with reducing levels of fire cover in the borough. Local Liberal Democrats will be maintaining pressure on Surrey and pushing for a reversal of the dangerous policy of only a single fire station in the borough.
