General election 2024 - Change is coming to Spelthorne

22 May 2024

Now that Rishi Sunak has finally called an election, Harry Boparai, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Spelthorne is campaigning to become Spelthorne's next MP so that he can play a constructive role in rebuilding the country after 14 disastrous years of Tory government.

Harry recently met with Daisy Cooper MP, and she is looking forward to welcoming him to Westminster in July.

Harry said “Across the board the Conservatives have failed the country in the most comprehensive fashion.  We need a change of government and to move away from serving the narrow self-interest of the Tories and their rich friends.  Government should be serving the interests of the people and working to make life better for everyone”.

Harry’s is passionate about the issues that affect the residents of Spelthorne and will be focusing on the key topics that will be deciding this election.

  • The NHS has gone from being the pride of the UK to being underfunded, under-staffed and demoralised. It is failing to deliver the service we all need and this has been the choice the Conservatives have made.

  • The Tories promised to tackle the horrendous Social Care problems we are facing.  In practice they have done nothing, and the situation is just getting worse while the Tories are twiddling their thumbs. In contrast the Liberal Democrats have a clear plan which recognises the vital importance of carers.

  • The Cost of Living crisis has been made worse by Conservatives economic policies.  While the rich have got significantly richer, the least well off in society have become worse off.  The number of children living in poverty has increased by 800,000 since 2010.  Inequality has risen steeply under this Conservative government.

  • Almost all areas of Public Services have declined under five Conservative Prime Minsters.  Across the board, the services we all rely on are coming under ever greater pressure.  The way that the water companies have failed in their duty, while at the same time paying out huge bonuses and dividends, sums up the Tory attitude to public services – something to be milked for whatever they and their friends can get out of them.

  • It comes as no surprise that crime and anti-social behaviour feel worse than ever.  The statistics under-state what is happening on the ground as people no longer bother reporting things to the police knowing that there will be no meaningful response or action.  The way to restore public confidence is to have more police officers working on the ground with local communities.

The Liberal Democrats have a comprehensive set of policies that add up to a Fair Deal for everyone.  Details are available here
