Lib Dem councillor uses grant to support work of Sunbury foodbank
Harry Boparai, Lib Dem divisional member for Sunbury Common and Ashford Common, is delighted that his allocation under the ‘Small Community Projects Fund’ has gone to St Saviour’s Church in Sunbury-on-Thames. The grant of £50k has been used to renovate the Church’s kitchen facilities, which were opened by Councillor Boparai at a ceremony last week.
St Saviour’s already runs a much-needed foodbank and helps re-distribute surplus food from supermarkets to the local community. The new facilities will allow for an expansion of the Church’s work to promote self-sufficiency in personal food provision. There are plans to help reduce local families’ reliance on fast food and takeaways by providing simple and nutritious cooking ingredients and instruction on how to turn these ingredients into quick, cheap but above all wholesome meals.
Cllr Boparai was very pleased with the result and said:
“It’s taken a lot of hard work to get to this point, but the ripple effect will be amazing. We already have volunteer chefs lined up from Kempton Park to teach food bank users how to cook. The grant is a great investment in this community where food deprivation is a real but complex issue, but I am confident that this approach will have an immediate beneficial impact on both family health and household finances.”
