Liberal Democrat councillors to shadow Cabinet roles
In light of the increased representations of Liberal Democrats on Spelthorne Borough Council, the Lib Dem Group of councillors have decided to shadow portfolios as part of their ongoing commitment to scrutinise council proceedings. Sandra Dunn has been duly selected to lead the team as the Group Leader of Liberal Democrat Councillors and has announced that as well as the 6 portfolios, she has requested a dedicated Communications & Social Media responsibility. The responsibilities have been allocated as follows:
Community Wellbeing and Housing | Nicola Cornes |
Environment and Compliance | Kathy Grant |
Corporate Management | Richard Dunn |
Economic Development, Customer Service, Estate & Transport | Chris Bateson |
Planning | Bernie Spoor |
Finance | Lawrence Nichols |
Communications and Social Media | Tom Fidler |
Commenting Opposition group leader Sandra Dunn said: "It is very important that we send the message to the Conservative administration that we will not be allowing them free reign of the Council and we hope that this allocation delivers the message that we mean business and will act as an effective team. It is fantastic that on the back of these all-time high results, I am joined by a team of fantastic, hard-working and diligent councillors who I believe bring a diverse range of skills to the opposition group. I have also added a new role for Communications and Social Media to ensure that residents are kept informed of decisions and that residents recognise we are acting on our commitment to dialogue which has been lacking from the ruling group. We will continue our Focuses and our network has expanded significantly with an influx of new members.
These roles allow us to commit our time and resources effectively to proposals for the Council's consideration, but also importantly to encourage residents to get in touch and know that there is a strong opposition team working hard behind the scenes in the residents' interests. We will work with our fellow opposition councillors from other parties where applicable, but also hope that our professionalism and knowledge is available to the Conservative administration when they are on message with what we believe as Liberal Democrats. We believe in a fair, tolerant society that delivers high-quality services to our residents, that is responsive to the demands of residents, but that is environmentally conscious and well costed."
