Liberal Democrats demand a fair voting system

All 72 Liberal Democrat MPs elected at the 2024 General Election, in Westminster Hall

The Liberal Democrats won 72 seats in the General Election, and 6 out 12 seats in Surrey - our best result for over a century. In Spelthorne, our excellent local candidate, Harry Boparai increased our share of the vote from 15% to 19%. Thank you to all our voters and  supporters for helping us achieve such a positive result. However, the Tories won in Spelthorne with only 30%. 70% of voters did not vote Conservative.

The 2024 General Election result was the least proportional ever. Labour won a landslide victory with only 33% of the vote -  7% fewer votes than Jeremy Corbyn won in 2017. 67% of the electorate did not vote Labour, but they still won by a landslide.

The Liberal Democrats have been in favour of a fair voting system for 102 years. Unfortunately, both the Labour and Conservative parties are wedded to the discredited & undemocratic First Past the Post System. This system makes many votes worthless, ensuring that the main two parties are always in power.

With its massive majority, Labour can now introduce a fair voting system, where each vote counts. Under such a system, you could vote for what you actually believe in, knowing that your vote will count.

When Labour refuse to back fair votes, the Lib Dems will be the voice of change in Parliament. The 72 newly-elected Lib Dem MPs will continue to campaign for fair votes & work tirelessly in Parliament to make sure all voices from all communities are heard.
