Lower Sunbury street improvements

31 Oct 2023

Surrey County Council are working to try to improve the travel network in Sunbury to make “communities safer, healthier and more attractive”.  Lower Sunbury is one of the first areas in Surrey to get this close attention.

The plan is still evolving and public consultation sessions were held in October.  You can still have you say and keep up to date with the scheme by visiting the dedicated website https://lowersunbury.commonplace.is/.

Surrey County Council is involving your local councillors as the scheme is moved forward and we will be keeping a close eye on developments.  We will be making sure that any proposals are shared with residents and properly consulted on before there is any attempt to implement anything.

In 2020 Surrey proposed an Active Travel Plan that would have made some roads in Lower Sunbury one-way only.  A Liberal Democrat survey received more than 850 responses, with 82% of people thinking that what was proposed would not be good for the area, with nearly 90% saying it would not make them more likely to walk or cycle more in the area.  This 2020 scheme, under the pressures of COVID, was rushed and did not meet local needs.  Surrey are now revisiting the subject and taking more time and consulting widely to try and get it right.

We see this as an opportunity to improve travel infrastructure in Lower Sunbury and as such are supportive of the initiative.  We will not however support proposals which will not be beneficial to the community as a whole.
