SPELTHORNE FOR ZONE 6

South-West train enters station

Spelthorne and Runnymede Liberal Democrats willingly add their voice to the growing calls from all sides of the political spectrum for Spelthorne to be fully integrated into the Oyster card ticketing system.
Despite being north of the River and more closely aligned with Middlesex than Surrey, Spelthorne loses out in many areas of service provision. None more so than where Transport is concerned.
It is widely recognised that the Travelcard and Oyster card systems are of immense benefit to those who use public transport whether it be rail or bus. Simplicity of use and universal interchange between both modes of transport encourages travel away from the private car with the benefits to the environment that brings.
Currently Spelthorne is yet again disadvantaged. Whilst Oyster cards may be used on buses, this is not the case with train travel on South West Trains. This despite it having one of the highest levels of commuter travel into London within the home counties. The add on cost of travelling beyond the current Zone 6 boundaries at Feltham to Ashford and Staines and Hampton to Sunbury and Shepperton are significant and place a disproportionate burden on Spelthorne residents.
Whilst the question of cost is invariably raised this should be counteracted by such a change bringing economic benefit to the Borough. It would encourage a greater level of commute into the Borough and would result in a plus factor for Commercial and Residential property prices as well as encouraging relocation. Whilst finances for Local Authorities remain tight Spelthorne should seriously consider that a financial contribution from them to make this happen would be a good investment.
Liberal Democrats will work with others to achieve the desired result for the benefit of all Spelthorne residents.
