Following the AGM, Councillor Bernie Spoor was elected to represent Spelthorne on the Surrey Crime and Police Panel. The role of the committee is to examine the actions and decisions of our Police and Crime Commissioner and we are delighted that Bernie has been successful.
Bernie has devoted a lot of time and effort in working with key stakeholders in the Sunbury area to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour, abandoned vehicles, Fly-tipping and County Lines issues of drugs and knives. He has a long-established correspondence with the Police and Crime Commissioner, challenging him to consider the unique issues that face Spelthorne unlike parts of Surrey.
Commenting on his election, Cllr Spoor said: "I have been attending local police meetings both in Tescos and at the public events put on in the community for a number of years. The role of Police & Crime Commissioner is not a position that sits comfortably as it encourages the politicisation of Police. Nonetheless, in my role, I will work across party lines and engage openly with all Councillors to get accountability on decisions made on Policing in our area".
This is welcome news for the Sunbury Lib Dems in particular who have been engaging with Council staff, the police and local businesses about the spike of anti-social behaviour in Sunbury during this Lockdown. The team have several projects including CCTV in shopping parades amongst other deterrents to help support residents in feeling safe.
