Spelthorne MP backs Olympic party as a good way to spend money

11 Dec 2011

We are continually told that everyone has to suffer because there is no money. Therefore you may have been surprised to discover that the government has found an extra £41million pounds to spend.

On which deserving cause you may ask? Disabled ex-servicemen, hospitals, schools, youth unemployment, public sector pensions, repairing pot holes, reducing tuition fees etc. Sadly no. The £41million is EXTRA money, on top of that already committed, for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. More fireworks etc. When asked to justify this colossal waste of public money in a time of austerity the minister said, " We have to spend this extra £41m or we would have been criticised."

You couldn't make it up!

When asked by a constituent to explain why this was being allowed Spelthorne's MP, Kwasi Kwarteng said "I think we have to view these ceremonies as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase the very best of our country to four billion people around the world. I think it is important therefore that we commit to getting the ceremonies absolutely right."

We shall have to wait and see if he gets an invite.
