We would like to thank everyone who voted for the Liberal Democrats in Spelthorne for your support. This is the third election in a row in which Lib Dems have made substantial progress - the national election in 2010, the county elections in 2009 and the borough elections in 2007 - a pattern that we intend to continue.

The election result has confirmed that the Liberal Democrats are now clearly the second party in Spelthorne with Labour a long way behind in third place. The level of support experienced on the doorstep points to further progress at the Borough elections in 2011.

There was a 6.1% swing to the Liberal Democrats from the Conservatives - the second highest in the South East. The Lib Dem vote was the highest since 1987, which was at the height of the support for the Social Democrats.

We congratulate Kwasi Kwateng on his election as MP and we hope that he becomes an informed and effective advocate for Spelthorne at Westminster.
