The councils will not evade scrutiny over the Eco Park

Unfortunately, due to the current Coronavirus Pandemic and the increased work pressures on Officers, the Extraordinary Overview & Scrutiny meeting to improve accountability over developments at the Eco-Park has had to be postponed. Whilst the Spelthorne Liberal Democrats are disappointed that the meeting originally scheduled for the 2nd February is unable to go ahead, they remain committed to getting answers for residents.

Liberal Democrat members of the Overview & Scrutiny Committee, Cllrs Tom Fidler, Lawrence Nichols and Richard Dunn have been proposing agenda items based on resident feedback. These include issues of smell, noise, the gases emitted from the stack, site developments and contractual operating arrangements.

Commenting, Cllr Tom Fidler said: "Residents should know that we will not stop until we get answers on this important issue. The volume of responses we have received are going unnoticed and they deserve to get the answers. We will continue to press for the issue to be brought forward at the earliest possible opportunity".

Cllr Lawrence Nichols added: "As a ward Councillor where the Eco-Park is situated, my colleagues and I have been asking questions to Suez [the contractors], Surrey CC and Spelthorne BC about the situation, but often these don't get full responses. The public meeting will be in the interests of everyone to have full transparency. But residents should continue to raise their concerns directly with the authorities and include us so we now keep up the pressure".

Cllr Richard Dunn reiterated that Spelthorne Liberal Democrats have always been opposed to the 'Eco-Park'. He said: "We were outside with protests before the site was built and we've never been satisfied with the lack of accountability over the site and the little information we have on what is actually going on. I'm proud we've maintained our opposition and will continue to stand up for residents. But we need this meeting as part of the journey to see the change that we, the local community need".
