Chilcott Report Backs Lib Dem Opposition to Iraq Invasion
Tony Blair led the Labour Party with strong Conservative support into the Iraq war illegally. Lord Chilcot's damning report into the invasion of Iraq is clear that Tony Blair lied to the parliament, that ...
- Military action was not the last resort.
- The severity of threat from Iraq's weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) was not justified.
- Policy was based on flawed intelligence
- There was too little time to prepare Britsh troops with the correct equipment
- Britain relied too heavily on its 'special relationship' with the United States and was subject to poor US decisons.
It was Liberal Democrats under the late Charles Kennedy who led the opposition to the illegal war that sadly cost the lives of almost 200 of our brave service men and women. Given that cost, and the cost we are still paying it is little consolation to now be proved right.
Lib Dem Leader Tim Farron has called on the government to learn from the mistakes and pledge it will never enter into similar war again.
Cllr Ian Beardsmore who campaigned against going to war said:
"Sending our troops abroad to fight is something we should avoid if at all possible. We have no right or obligation to 'Police The World'. If we fight anywhere in the world it should only be with international backing."
