The People’s Vote march shows how the people really think

More than one million people turned out to march through London to demand another vote on Brexit. This would not be a rerun of the referendum held in June 2016, but one based on knowing what Brexit would look like in detail. It would be a vote where the electorate could make a genuine informed choice without the lies and spin which characterised the first ill-thought-out ballot.

Spelthorne Liberal Democrats were well represented on the march, together with friends and family who want a better future in Europe, and not to become an isolated island somewhere off the coast of continental Europe. The mood of the crowd was friendly and positive with a huge number of banners expressing support for the EU and the economic benefits membership undoubtably offers.

The whole day was best summed up by a gentleman from Hamburg in Germany, who was going round to everyone he could in Parliament Square telling us that Germany wants us to remain, something that he felt so strongly about that he had come over just for the march. With friends like this is Europe, who wants to leave and be forced to cosy up to Donald Trump.

There were marchers from every conceivable section of politics and society in general. We saw a large contingent proudly flying Cornish flags. There were groups of Conservatives remainers who must have winced at the severe but justified criticism of Theresa May's leadership (or lack of it). Many children under voting age were carrying placards that pointed out the fact that leaving the EU would damage their future the most. Labour was strongly represented, but there was also a lot of anger at the failure of Jeremy Corbyn to do anything to avert the disaster that Brexit would represent for this country.

As well as a forest of EU flags, many people carried or wore the union jack to make it clear that being against Brexit is real patriotism. Everyone on the march wanted to vote again for a chance to make sure our country would remain an outward-looking and inclusive society that wanted the best for everyone in this country and Europe. These are traditional Liberal values and ones we should be proud to be associated with.
