Twinning with Mauritius does nothing for Spelthorne residents
Local Lib Dems have called for the Conservative leadership of Spelthorne Borough to halt the planned twinning link with Grand Port Savanne District Council on the island of Mauritius.
The twinning link papers identified the aims as being to "exchange knowledge, information and ideas around democracy, economic development and waste management" with the Council situated 6,000 miles away.
Lib Dem, Leader of the Opposition Cllr Colin Strong said, "This proposal turned up just a few days before the Council Executive met and so there was NO public consultation."
Cllr Ian Beardsmore added: "Local residents are being hammered by the credit crunch but the only 'urgent' item on the Executive's agenda concerns forging a link with Mauritius. The Tories need to get their priorities right."
